How California Chrome Changed My Life
is a collection of stories from 61 different writers whose lives were touched by a beautiful copper-colored racehorse with flashy white markings. “Chrome’s” unlikely rise to fame, and triumph over setbacks gave many of them hope to face the challenges in their own lives.

In response to derogatory comments about their plans to buy a Thoroughbred mare, his breeders and original owners— Perry Martin and Steve Coburn— formed DAP Racing, which stood for “Dumb Ass Partnership.” The mare was Love the Chase, and California Chrome was her first foal. Chrome won the 2014 Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes— the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Many believe he would have won the Triple Crown if he hadn't been injured in the Belmont stakes.

In 2015, a diagnosis of bone bruising ended his four-year old season. There was talk that Chrome would be retired to stud, but he recovered under the expert care of Taylor Made Farm, who had just bought the Coburn’s share of his ownership. California Chrome made an incredible comeback as a five-year-old, including a win in the $10,000,000 Dubai World Cup, and retired as the richest American Thoroughbred racehorse of all time.
